Girls lacrosse falls 17-4 to Blake, aims to turn season around

The sun shone brightly, and the blistering eighty-degree weather provided the perfect stage for girls’ varsity lacrosse to face Breck on Saturday, May 18. After an intense game in the hot temperatures, Breck took the victory 17-4. Coming into the game, the Spartans had a record of 1-9. Nevertheless, they played with aggression.

In a back-and-forth battle, Breck secured the first point of the game, but senior Charlotte Goings was able to answer back, weaving through the opposing offense to score a goal with 8 minutes left in the first quarter. In the following play, Breck fought back, scoring three consecutive goals, leaving 31 seconds on the clock. Sophomore Dia Chaney gained possession on a draw for a clutch play by freshman Maya Peters, a perfectly top left corner shot, ending the half 2-4, with Breck in the lead. “We have been struggling with them [Breck], but we did a great job in our transition and draws,” Chaney said.

“My favorite moment in the game was when one of my teammates got their first goa. It didn’t count but I counted it”

The second quarter began with an aggressive Breck checking the other team, allowing Breck player Lila Nguyen to secure the first point of the quarter and her third goal of the game. Eight minutes left in the quarter, the crowd awaited SPA’s response. However, Breck continued with number 13, Olivia Nolan, twisting through SPA’s defense for a breakaway and, ultimately, a point. Breck continued with two more consecutive goals, capitalizing on SPA’s defense. “We need to improve on our ground balls,” Chaney said. The second quarter finished with Breck leading 10-2.

The final quarter had Breck running across the entire field length and utilizing their speed to score the first point. The score was 3-16 before Goings launched a throw to score, leaving her with a hat trick. Breck finished the game, scoring one more point before the end of the game. SPA fell short in the game; however, each team was proud of their resilience, “My favorite moment in the game was when one of my teammates got their first goal,” Chaney said. “It didn’t count but I counted it”.

The girls’ next game will be at home, facing Two Rivers on May 20.
