During winter, it can feel impossible to go outside due to cold temperatures and snow. According to UCLA Health, being outside not only boosts the immune system and improves heart health but also improves mental health and reduces stress. While these facts may feel like common knowledge, that does not make Minnesota winters any easier to brave, despite the importance of getting fresh air each day. Here are some ideas for encouraging outdoor activity in cold weather.
- Dress for the weather. Being outside in the winter requires layers and without essentials like hats, gloves and quality socks, standing out in the cold can feel miserable.
- Set a small goal. Even just a step out the door is a movement in the right direction. Setting a small goal, like going for a 10-minute walk every day, is a way to build a good habit and celebrate an easy win.
- Don’t forget why you’re outside. When it’s cold, it’s easy to forget how good being outside is for you. Try to reframe how you think about the weather. While it may feel uncomfortable, try to change your mindset to being in the cold as self-care.
- Bring a friend. If solo walks aren’t motivating, spending time with friends in winter is a great way to forget about the chilly weather and still get outdoors.
- Make it fun. Bring along a pet, listen to music or an audiobook as you walk, find a new outdoor activity, or walk to new places.
