Pregame Coverage: Metro-South Phoenix hopes to keep season alive

The Phoenix take on the Eastview Lightning in their third meeting of the season at the Burnsville Ice Center.

The Metro-South Phoenix girls hockey team is set to take on the Eastview Lightning on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Burnsville Ice Center in the first round of the section tournament.

The Phoenix come into the matchup averaging nearly 2.6 goals per game and have posted a 9-15 record through 24 games played. The Phoenix gave up an average of 3.33 goals per game on the season. In their last meeting with the Lightning, the Phoenix came out on top with a score of 5-1. The Phoenix are looking to build on last weeks win and build momentum in the postseason.

The Phoenix hold the 3rd seed in section 3AA while the Lightning hold the 6th seed in section 3AA. The Phoenix are led by center Madisyn Krumholz who leads the Phoenix with 34 points, consisting of 24 goals and 10 assists. Following Krumholz is left-wing Ella Bond with 27 points, consisting of14 goals and 13 assists. Both averaging over a point a game. On defense, Lily Keefe leads the way with 13 total points, consisting of 3 goals and 10 assists. Behind her is captain Heidi Deuel with 8 points through 22 games. In net for the Phoenix is captain Greta Magnuson, who has played in 24 games and has posted a .894 save percentage and 942:42 of ice time this season.

The Lightning is 5-19 on the year with an average of 1.68 goals scored and 3 goals a given-up per game. The Lightning is led by forward Erin Hayward, who has 17 points through 25 games, with 10 goals and 7 assists. She is tied with forward Sari Cords, who also has 17 points, consisting of 7 goals and 10 assists across 23 games played. On the backside, Ellie Groebner with 13 points in 25 games played. In between the pipes for the Lighting is goaltender Lila Hanson, who has posted an astonishing .911 save percentage through 1,292:18 minutes of play. Eastview hopes to snap a two-game losing streak and upset the third-seeded Phoenix and keep their playoff hopes alive.

The two teams have had two previous meetings this season and split the series 1-1. Both teams are looking to break the tie and keep their season alive.

The winner of Wednesday’s matchup will take on the winner of Rosemount and Eagan on Feb. 11.
