Pops Concert hits a high note

A snowball fight erupts after the orchestra finished playing “Sleigh Ride”.

The Upper School Pops Concert was a smash hit on Dec. 2. A wide and diverse variety of songs, performed by an equally diverse media of instruments, brought the Huss Center to life. The orchestra thrilled the audience with their spaghetti western melody featuring “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” and “The Magnificent Seven” theme.  The choirs’ soft a cappela songs and incredible solos were shiver worthy. And the jazz bands filled the packed theater with beautiful sounds.

The Friday evening event was the first of two performances. Emcees Lauren Boettcher and Sara Bohjanen introduced the songs and provided interesting and hilarious commentary between sets. The concert may not have been centered around the winter theme as expected, but instead took the audience on a musical journey from the jazz music of the 50’s all the way up to current pop hits like “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars.

The journey did include one winter song, “Sleigh Ride,” which ended with the eruption of a snowball fight (not real snow of course). The night was filled with excitement and good tunes; a few audience members even stood up and danced at points throughout the show. As the final piece, Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” came to an end — featuring an incredible drum solo from senior Lutalo Jones — the audience rose to their feet, giving the musicians a well-earned standing ovation.

The POPs Concert performs again tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Huss Center.  Admission is free.
