Ninth grader Emma Davies leaps from a cliff on Lake Superior after a day of sailing. “It was so cool jumping into the water that I had just been sailing on for hours,” Davies said.

Growing up, ninth grader Emma Davies joined her family in countless trips that included camping, exploring and sailing. Davies’ favorite memories from the trips were always spent in the sailboat.

“I loved how open everything was when I was on a sailboat, and how big everything seemed,” Davies said.

Remembering her early memories from sailing, Davies decided to take another trip. This past summer Davies went to Camp Warren, a YMCA camp in Eveleth, Minnesota, and traveled to the Apostle Islands. Davies spent five days sailing and exploring around the Islands. A highlight of the trip for Davies was jumping off the cliffs into Lake Superior.

“It was so cool jumping into the water that I had just been sailing on for hours,” Davies said.

For Davies, sailing is a way to get away from her normal life and enjoy the nature around her.

“The view [on Lake Superior] is so different from the view at home, and I love seeing all the animals and nature and things I normally wouldn’t see,” Davies said.

Davies plans on going back to the Apostle Islands this summer, this time for ten days, and exploring even more.
