This year, there are two new physical education electives offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. In the first semester course, Team and Individual Sports, students will be playing different sports ranging from basketball to golf.

“Team and individual sports is a really fun class, it’s a chance to play organized sports during the school day to break up the academic schedule and its also a chance for you to play sports you wouldn’t otherwise play,” Upper School Physical Education teacher Cari Jo Anderson said.

Weight Training and Conditioning is offered second semester, students in this class will focus on all the basic lifts and will create an eight week training program.

“Weight training is really applicable to life after high school, we’ll be doing things like circuit training, interval training and learning how to utilize different gym facilities,” Anderson said.

Because it is only the first time these electives are being offered, students in these activities will have a lot of say in what sports and activities are played in class. There are four students in Team and Individual Sports and 18 spots. Weight Training and Conditioning has 12 out of 18 spots filled.

“I’m hoping people learn different ways to be active, develop a desire to be active in different ways and develop the ability to to teach people what they’ve learned,” Anderson said.

Team and Individual Sports will be taking place during period five.

“I’m excited to build this program for SPA. I think that it’s a great way to break up an academic schedule and to learn different ways to be active,” Anderson said.
