Water makes up about 60% of the average person’s body weight. Water also protects organs and tissues. No living organism can survive without water.
According to Medical News Today, dehydration causes difficulty with concentration, mood swings, fatigue, headaches and more severe issues, such as kidney damage and reduced cognitive function. Even with all of this information pointing to the importance of hydration, staying hydrated still isn’t easy. Drinking enough water every day is very important, but like many commitments, it’s easier said than done. Building a hydration habit is key to preventing dehydration. Here are some ways to stay hydrated:
- Start the morning with water. While it’s very easy to instantly grab coffee or another caffeinated beverage, forming the habit of drinking a cup of water when you wake up is an effective and easy way to maintain hydration.
- Carry a water bottle everywhere. When water is out of sight, it’s easy for hydration to slip out of mind. However, if you have a water bottle, staying hydrated becomes convenient and simple. Having a water bottle also can be motivation for drinking more water. Adding stickers or a fun design to your bottle can make hydration more enjoyable.
- Switch it up. If you’re somebody who doesn’t like the taste of water, a great way to stay hydrated is to add flavoring, such as fruits or flavor packets. Having a drink that interests you makes drinking water much easier and more enjoyable.
- Eat fruits and vegetables. Many fruits and vegetables have a high water content. Having strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon or cucumbers keeps you very hydrated without even drinking water.
