Coming back to school after a two-week break and beginning the second semester, life can feel stressful. Setting resolutions, like the New Year tradition, in the academic setting causes students’ minds to be filled with goals and ideas as to how the rest of the school year should go. Setting specific goals for the upcoming semester is a great way to begin 2026. Here are some healthy tips to start the semester strong and smart.
- Pay attention to the syllabus. If your course has a syllabus, chances are there are dates or important pieces of information for semester two that may have been missed at the beginning of the school year. Checking back over the syllabus can keep you ahead of the curve and prevent unwelcome surprises.
- Create a routine. Having specific structures for the week, or even just a morning routine is invaluable to a balanced schedule. According to Northwestern Medicine, routines help manage stress in an effective way. Additionally, when creating a new routine, be sure to limit new changes; according to the National Library of Medicine as adding in a multitude of changes in short periods of time won’t change behaviors.
- Take time away from distractions. It’s easy to slip back into distractions, but finding ways to limit distractions and complete important or time consuming tasks is a great way to be and feel productive.
- Strengthen connections. Difficult times can come upon everybody, so in order to maintain a healthy mindset, it’s very important to have a solid support system. Being able to ask teachers for help or friends to just hang out is incredibly meaningful towards a strong semester two.
