TIME TO IMPROVE. English classes develop writing and critical thinking skills that are crucial outside of the classroom.

English class is one of the most important yet overlooked classes in North American schools, especially in the last few decades. English classes teach people how to effectively use language, how to write different types of essays and stories, and about canonical and contemporary literature.

Because it is a requirement, English class is sometimes overlooked by students, and seen as simply an easy and free period by many people at school. This should not be the thought process of students walking into the English classes. The first important reason why students should take English seriously is so they can do well in class and understand what they are learning.

Being proficient with the skills provided in English is important for the real world, with job applications and emails being a large part of modern work. Being a good writer can determine if one will get hired or not for a possible job. Understanding the literature being taught in English is essential to getting good grades in the class. If what is being taught is not understood in English, there is no doubt that students will fall behind. Everyone wants to do well in their classes, and English is no exception. To do well in English people have to actively listen and participate.

Another important reason why students should take English seriously is to learn about and experience the joy of interesting literature. Whether people are talking about certain topics, writing, or reading certain pieces of literature, there will often be certain stories that people will be interested in. One just has to wait to find that one topic in literature that will pull them in and make them fall in love with it. Finding something to enjoy in English will make the class much more enjoyable and will make it not seem like such a task.

Take advantage of the teachers and classes and find something to love about the class. Generally, people should try and enjoy English and their grades will also improve with that passion for it, as well as improving skills that will help them throughout the rest of life in the workforce.
