As October begins to creep up, horror fans will be excited to hear that a plethora of big-name horror films are on the way.

This fall has already been impressive with The Nun II entering theaters Sept. 8 and A Haunting in Venice entering theaters Sept. 15. Sequel to The Nun (2018), one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time at almost $365 million, The Nun II has some big shoes to fill. But, as the latest installment in The Conjuring franchise, the current highest-grossing horror franchise of all time, the film has a huge fan base behind it.

Similarly, as a sequel to Death on the Nile (2022) and the newest film about the fictional detective Hercule Poirot, A Haunting in Venice has some lofty expectations too. However, both films have grossed less than predicted in their first few weeks in theater, perhaps not living up to the hype. The industry has historically suffered from an exorbitant amount of focus on mega-franchises and too many sequels and installments like these.

However, the sheer quantity of horror films out and coming out has been a great boost to the industry, still recovering from the pandemic. And luckily, there are a few drops of new blood in the water. Although the beginning of the season has been exhilarating already, the best may be yet to come.

Directing his first horror movie, It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta is the breath of fresh, demonic air this spooky season needs. Set in high school, an Indian-American teenager tries to fit in, turning away from her family and friends in the process. But, when a demon takes control of her best friend, she must figure out a way to save her.

It Lives Inside should be a refreshing break from the typical horror shticks, as it is rooted in Indian mythology. The movie already premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March and will enter theaters Oct. 20.

Of course, there’s also an abundance of blockbuster films from more proven directors and franchises on the way too. Pet Sematary: Bloodline, V/H/S/85, and The Exorcist: Believer and are all set to release in October.

Hopefully, these movies live up to the hype.

More interestingly, though, Five Nights at Freddy’s, adapted from the hit video game franchise begun in 2014, will enter theaters Oct. 27. The movie is about a security guard working the night shift at “Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria,” where unbeknownst to him, a surprise lays in store. Although the movie is not an installment, it comes from a giant in the industry— Blumhouse Productions, known for films like Split (2016), Halloween (2018), Us (2019), Get Out (2017), Paranormal Activity (2007), Insidious (2010), The Purge (2013), and M3GAN (2022).

The movie should be good, considering it has been in the works since 2015. After multiple failures and stallings, the film, originally under Warner Bros, moved to Blumhouse where it will finally see the light of day, much to the pleasure of horror and video game fans alike.

So, as the leaves turn brown and Halloween approaches, get some popcorn and head to the theaters to catch one of these blockbusters; it’s bound to be a horrifying experience.
