Imagine when you were younger, around early elementary school. Trading cards had a hold on so many of us in the mid to late 2010s with the sudden boom of their popularity. Some students at SPA felt nostalgia for the craze of trading cards and decided to start a revival of the hobby and with that the trading card club has come into fruition for the 2025 school year.
The trading card club is another new addition this year to the long lists of clubs at the upper school this year. Run by seniors Thomas Ferguson and Johann Devriese, two lovers of trading cards of all different kinds. Ferguson and Devriese hope to build and strengthen the community through these cards.
“Im super excited for all the stuff we are going to hopefully do as a club this year,” Ferguson said. “Me and my friend Johann got back into playing cards over the summer and we thought it would be fun to start a club when school started back up again,” he said.
A typical day at the club can vary, with there being lots of opportunity for activity. With there being so many options of different cards and what a group of people can do with them, there are endless possibilities for lovers of trading cards.
The club even has a small partnership with a local trading card shop in St. Paul. “We partnered with a local card store, Great Lakes Trading Cards, which is pretty cool,” Devriese said..
Trading cards have been a part of American youth culture since the late 1950’s and have stuck around into the modern day evolving into dozens of different forms. From vintage Baseball and Basketball cards, to now having Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards which have become extremely popular. Many have had some relationship with trading cards throughout their life and this club serves as a path to rekindle that joy and intrigue.
“I’m excited to be in the club for sure, I think it should be pretty fun,” said senior Ella England, a new attendee of the club. “It’s the first year of the club so I’m excited to see how it will go,” England said.
The club will be meeting once a week during X-period. Stop by the art wing if you are interested and experience the joy that comes with trading cards.
