Walking up to the intersection of Portland Avenue and East 34th street, one will see a gathering of people around bushels of flowers, handwritten cards and a headstone honoring Renee Nicole Good. The 37-years-old mother of three was shot and killed by the hands of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Jan. 7, and the story has dominated the headlines. But her death is one of eight killings by ICE since 2026 began. On Jan. 24, Alex Pretti, an Intensive Care Unit nurse, was shot and killed by ICE while trying to protect another protester from the pepper spray of an ICE agent. These deaths occurred after President Trump’s deployment of over 2,000 ICE agents and a surge of 22,000 new ICE hires. The timeline below follows the events over the past month after the increased ICE activity.
