[BRIGHTENING AND FRIGHTENING] Going outside, turkeys at the U of M, Pinterest and more

BRIGHTENING AND FRIGHTENING. On one side vulnerability is a superpower, whether through reaching out, the physical healing of red light therapy or the courage to prioritize mental health. On the other side is the reality of the digital age filled with negative comparisons, cyberbullying and fractured attention spans.

Brightening: The benefit of going outside
With temperatures rising, your health should rise as well. Spring and summer are the best times to take advantage of outdoor resources. Spending time has been proven to improve mental and physical health. Whether it is taking a walk or lying on the beach, it can reduce stress and anxiety in one’s life. The calming nature and detachment from stress and work or school make it easier to focus on being outside and enjoying oneself. It is often overlooked because of external stressors, but as warmer weather starts to appear, take time for yourself and go outside.

Frightening: U of M Turkeys
There is a flock of turkeys that lives on the east bank of the University of Minnesota, which I encounter often while driving to school. I don’t fully know how many there are; sometimes it’s just one or two, but I’ve seen as many as twenty in one place before. Now, I wouldn’t normally mind the turkeys, since they kind of just exist, but these turkeys are possibly the most brazen birds I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. They wander in the street, blocking traffic and don’t respond to horns or shouting. I have been stuck behind this flock multiple times this year, sometimes for as long as five minutes and though I have a lot of respect for living things, sometimes I like to imagine these birds as part of someone’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Brightening: The joy of Pinterest
As summer rolls around, people are beginning to look for inspiration for their summer. Is it a lake summer or an ocean summer? Is it a European travel summer or a cozy backyard summer? Is it a concert summer or a family reunion summer? The beauty of Pinterest is its ability to inspire the aesthetics you want for your life, your fashion or even the changing seasons. Pinterest is a photo-based app that allows people to make mood boards on anything they want. With summer coming, many people have been breaking out their Pinterest boards again in light of the excitement about the upcoming break. It can be helpful for social media posts and mood boards, but it can also be used as a fun activity to pass the time.

Brightening: Hi-C
Hi-C is an underrated soda. Many stores used to sell this refreshing drink, but very few sell it now. The main stores where it’s sold are AMC Theaters and Noodles & Company. It is the best soda because it comes in many different flavors, orange, fruit punch, strawberry, grape and tropical punch. More people need to try this drink because it’s incredibly tasty and is a flashback to childhood juice boxes. If you want, try it with Sprite to add a fizzy taste.
