With the school year starting up again, this year we are being introduced to the new activity of fall trap shooting. The sport usually only takes place in the spring, with this being the first year that students will also be able to participate in the fall. Trap shooting has been going strong at SPA for decades and has been continuously growing in popularity. Members of the team are preparing for the upcoming season with weekly practices.
“I think this season is going to be a great opportunity for us to build our skills even more,” said senior captain Johnny Rog. “We’re trying to get a lot more people to join right now, especially ninth graders,” Rog said.
The team practices at the Minneapolis Gun Club a couple of times per week and will be competing in tournaments when available on weekends. “It’s kind of far away, like forty-five minutes, it’s a long haul, but we go there every day to practice. With all this practice time, I am hoping everyone is going to be a lot more confident in the season. Everyone is going to be feeling good; it’s going to be a great season,” Rog said.
“Im very excited about this fall, I think it will be really fun,” said Junior Kamran Janjua. “I have done trap shooting before in the spring, but it’s cool that we can do it in the fall now too,” Janjua said.
Official practices start the week of Sept. 14, where members of the team will start going to the Minneapolis Gun Club for every practice. Conferences are announced that same week on the Sept. 17 where the team will be placed in a conference deciding what schools they will be competing with. On Sept. 21, competition week one begins, where they will compete against others in the conference on the weekend of Sept. 26.
If you want to join the team there is still plenty of room available, or if you just want to support, keep an eye out for the trap shooting team this fall.
