On a cold January afternoon, the first racers prepare to start the slalom course down the main face of Buck Hill for a race. early-season competition

At the downhill ski team’s meet Wednesday at Buck Hill in Burnsville, the boys and girls teams competed against a large selection of other schools in SPA’s conference.

It’s important to be aggressive and look ahead when you’re going down the course.

— Evy Sachs

The race started at 4 p.m. with the competitors lined up on top of the hill ready to ski down. Once on top of the hill, they were either placed in the blue or red section, signifying which line they would take down the run. Their times were then announced through a loudspeaker at the bottom of the hill at the end of each skier’s run continuously for about an hour.

“It’s important to be aggressive and look ahead when you’re going down the course,” sophomore Evy Sachs said.

For both the girls’ and boys’ categories, the Spartans achieved above-average results for their division. Results are recorded in the form of points. The amount of points that can be received is a combination of the two times you got for your two runs down the hill. The higher amount of points, the faster the skier went down the hill those two times. For the girls, top-performing Spartan, Evy Sachs, got 57 points, and freshman Juliette Smith got 50.5 points. For the boys, top-ranking junior Caden Burns got 60 points, and senior Henry Giles trailed close behind with 59 points. “Our Boys team has a couple amazing racers, same with the girls. With Black and Breck being known for their teams, I am pretty happy with how we placed,” said Evy Sachs.

Overall, the Spartans were satisfied with their performance. Nevertheless, they look to continue improving as the season progresses. The team’s next meet is on Wednesday, Jan. 24, once again at Buck Hill.
