Senior Sona Jain plays both soccer and lacrosse for SPA. She has only been on the team for two years, but already feels at home. She will play again this year.
Q: When did you start playing lacrosse?
A: I started playing only about two years ago because I didn’t want to do track. My friends got me into lacrosse because she’s been doing it all of her SPA career.
Q: How do you prepare during the off season?
A: I wouldn’t say I practice often, but when it comes up, I do pass around and wall ball in the gym. I did play in a few tournaments last year in the summer with a co-op team called Ducks.
Q: Are you following any favorite teams or players?
A: Not really, I watch some college lacrosse but not any specific teams. I watch once in a while and I haven’t watched in a long time, I usually only ever watch it when lacrosse is actually coming up.
Q: How often are practices?
A: During the season they are every day for an hour and a half, then we have games over the weekend.
Q: What equipment do you need to play and what is your pre-game routine?
A: I use a standard stick, goggles and my soccer cleats and my routine is the common soccer stretches, passing and a few sprints.
Q: What was the most challenging competition you played in?
A: The most challenging and most crucial game was against Breck; it was close the entire time and we won by 1 point.
Q: What motivates you to play harder and do better in each game?
A: My teammates motivate me the most, especially my closest friends from different schools, by pushing each other and bringing laughter.
Q: What’s the hardest part of playing lacrosse that you don’t look forward to?
A: The hardest part is staying conditioned and focused the whole game; I don’t really enjoy the conditioning runs and when we have to practice in the gym.
Q: What is a common stereotype of lacrosse players?
A: A common stereotype is that lacrosse players are overly aggressive or rely more on physicality than skill. A lot of the players I met in my first year, from different teams, were very friendly and casual.
Q: Do you have some goals for the next season?
A: My goal this upcoming season is to improve my stick skills and be more defensive on the ball.
