1) RETAKE DAY WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19. If you did not have your picture taken on Picture Day, this will be your last chance. A picture is needed for your school ID card and for the yearbook. If you ordered a picture package, you will be receiving it in Advisory in the next few days, please take it home right away to show your parents. If you are planning on retaking your photo, please return the picture package when you have another picture taken on Wednesday. Thanks for your cooperation!

2) Mark your calendars for the week of November 5th-9th when the M/US Book Fest comes to the Summit Center and Library Classroom. Jim Walsh kicks off this year’s event with a talk and book signing at 10:30 a.m. on November 5th in the gym. Jim Walsh is a writer, columnist, journalist, and songwriter from Minneapolis. He is the former pop music critic for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and a former columnist and editor for City Pages, and has written for most every publication in the Twin Cities, as well as Rolling Stone magazine, the Village Voice, New York Times, and SPIN. He is the author of “The Replacements: All Over But The Shouting: An Oral History” and is working on a forthcoming history on the Twin Cities punk scene for the Minnesota Historical Society Press. As The Mad Ripple, he hosts and performs at the songwriter collective The Mad Ripple Hootenanny, which has been going strong since 2007. Book Fest is also looking for submissions for the annual student poster contest focusing on the theme of “Stories Through Song” to tie in with Jim Walsh’s book and talk. Entry forms with specific requirements are available from Ms. Brooks in the library. Students have until October 1st to submit their work. Winners will see their poster professionally printed and displayed throughout the campus, so please get your entries in – and start making your book list for another exciting SPA Book Fest!

3) There will be another informal meeting at 3:15pm Monday Sept. 17th for all students interested in Dance Team this winter. Even if you are unsure about participating but have some interest feel free to come to learn more about the team. The meeting will be held in Mr. Brown’s office.

4) Ninth Graders: If you did not sign up for a 2nd student group last Monday, please stop by the Dean’s office and indicate your preference. Thursday student groups will meet on Monday next week.

5) Upper School Students: Schedule change for the week of September 17. In order to welcome our German exchange students in a timely way, we are moving our assembly from Monday, Sept. 17 to Thursday, September 20. Thursday student groups will meet on Monday.

6) Film Club invites everyone – freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, faculty, staff, all of you – to our first movie, “Mean Girls,” screening next Wednesday, Sept. 19 in the Lecture Room at 6:00 p.m. Film Club has chosen “high school” as a main theme and many of the movies you’ll have the opportunity to see throughout the year will explore the high school experience, whether that’s comic, satirical, horrific, or historical. And as always, we’ll begin each event with a cartoon and a chapter from some goofy 1940s B-grade serial.
