Faculty members talk substance abuse with parents, senior class

At Monday’s senior class meeting, Dean of Students Judy Cummins and Upper School Principal Chris Hughes discussed issues of substance abuse with the senior class. Their speech emphasized the ability of faculty to help, not punish, students in need of assistance. They also noted that the greatest concern for faculty is that they not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. “The urban myth out there is that driving under the influence of marijuana is not a problem,” Hughes said. The speech followed a series of conversations with parents concerning youth substance abuse at school. Also mentioned was an assembly from the 2011-12 school year featuring Harvard University Director of Alcohol and Other Drug Services Ryan Travia, who placed an onus on SPA’s drug policies which emphasize helping the student body.
