Advanced Scientific Research students commit to their craft

The hard work done by four seniors in the new Advanced Scientific Research class culminated in presentations on Wednesday night. Seniors Gina Nguyen, Ian Rolf, Asher Szachowicz, and Clara Stahlmann Roeder performed scientific research projects over the course of the semester, and presented their results to students, parents and faculty Wednesday. Nguyen studied DNA and how it splits under extreme heat. Rolf built a waterproof robot that could be used to suction up pore water from lake floors. Szachowicz looked at how effective ethyl alcohol, the main ingredient in hand sanitizer, is at killing e. coli. Stahlmann Roeder examined how stover, corns stalks and leaves left over from corn harvests, can be distilled to glucose and used as an alternative form of fuel. Not all of their results came out as they expected, but as Stahlmann Roeder said, “It’s about the journey.”
