Senior Jesse Wussler plays varsity soccer and ultimate frisbee for SPA. He enjoys playing soccer and ultimate frisbee and often finds time to play outside of practices and games. His dedication to sports was fueled by SPA’s variety of athletic options.
Wussler started playing on a soccer team at the age of 5. While sporadically playing for club teams throughout middle school, his SPA soccer journey started in ninth grade, when he joined the SPA junior varsity team. Wussler earned a spot on the varsity team his junior year, where he primarily plays center back.
His dedication to the craft of soccer stems from the supportive environment of the team and how each teammate is “supportive and nice,” he said. Besides the three consecutive state championships the team has under their belt, the community also adds to the team dynamic. “We plan to winstate again and the community is pretty good,” Wussler said.
Outside of the season, his passion for soccer led him and a few friends to start the tutorial footy league. After the junior retreat ended, he and some other people began to play soccer every tutorial on the North Lawn. Although they haven’t been able to get back out there this year, Wussler plans to continue this activity. “We gotta bring that back again, every time there was a tutorial, I was out there, it was gas,” he said.
In addition to playing soccer, Wussler also plays ultimate frisbee. The SPA team is called the Duckies, a name whose origin is unclear.
He is a captain for the varsity club team and tries to act on what his previous captains from ninth grade taught him. “The captains made a lasting impression to lead by example and be a good role model,” Wussler said.
As one of the paramount players on the team, he plays both roles, cutting and handling. A cutter runs the routes and a handler is similar to a quarterback. “I like cutting more because I like running and catching the points,” Wussler said.
A common theme across both sports is pickup play; like tutorial footy, Wussler and other ultimate teammates try to play a quick pickup game of ultimate frisbee during free tutorials and X-periods when they aren’t swamped with homework.
