George and the Dragon is a neighborhood classic and favorite for the people of southwest Minneapolis. Located on 813 W 50th street, the restaurant has existed for thirteen years since its initial opening date in 2012. Owned and operated by Fred Navarro and his family, George and the Dragon has been an important part of the Lynnhurst community with its excellent food and overwhelming sense of friendliness.
The restaurant is coined as a pub; its main influences stem from the United Kingdom’s dining culture. George and the Dragon offers up traditional British pub food, French cuisine and Filipino food. These different genres of food offer many choices of what to eat and drink, each with its own unique way of being incredibly delicious.
Firstly, the pub food serves up that cozy sense of comfort food while being unique and detailed in the preparation of these classic menu items. Fish and chips, burgers, and toasties (to name a few British staples) are available to order. French fries (chips) and onion rings are also available to order on the side or as an appetizer.
The French food is also amazing and entails entrees like Steak Au Poivre. French cuisine has the least amount of items on the menu, but is not to be looked over when deciding what to eat.
Lastly, the Filipino food is arguably the most exciting and best part of the restaurant’s plethora of menu offerings. When opening the restaurant, Navarro thought that paying homage to his heritage through food would be one of the best ways to stay connected to his culture and family. Lumpia, a Filipino appetizer similar to a fried spring roll, is listed as the Filipino tribute on the menu and is absolutely amazing. For a main course, the Asian Hangover mixes many different elements of Filipino food into one stir fry to make a delicious bowl.
Drinks can not be forgotten, with it being a pub. There are choices between many beers, wine, and sodas.
The restaurant is mostly reasonably priced but slightly on the expensive side, as it is a sit-down restaurant. Main courses range from 15 to 26 dollars, appetizers nine to 14 dollars, and drinks ranging from four to 20 dollars, depending on the beverage.
Go to George and the Dragon and experience the Southwest Minneapolis staple with its great food and atmosphere.
