The Boys Varsity Baseball huddle together during the 2011-2012 season. This year, the snow has delayed their season, forcing them to postpone all of their games so far.

With two games already rescheduled and Wednesday’s game likely to be moved, the Boys Varsity Baseball team’s season has seen the first-hand effect of the late snowfall in April.

“The snow has been difficult for not only us, but high school baseball in general,” senior captain Matthew Fiedler said. “Unfortunately, Minnesota does not have enough indoor baseball facilities to help a situation like this.

According to Fiedler, there are only a few domes that can be rented for practice and the Metrodome is the only dome that can host games. “With every team in the state, both baseball and softball, trying to use these limited facilities, it leaves us with no choice but to practice at odd hours and use our gym,” he said. “It’s very frustrating.”

So far, baseball and softball have had to reschedule multiple games and the games can only be reschedule in a way that the teams will have to play 5-7 games a week.

With baseball specifically, the games will have a profound impact on the pitching rotation. In a normal season 4-5 players would pitch, but in a season like this, the team will have to call on 8-9 pitchers. “That high volume of games is devastating on a pitching staff,” Fiedler said. “However, everyone is in the same boat here and I feel we have one of the deepest staffs in the state which will give us an advantage.”

St. Paul Academy and Summit School isn’t the only school that will experience the negative consequences of the snow. Fiedler expects to see a statewide trend of high scoring games. But he feels that despite the setback, this team can still have a good season. BVB’s first game is slated to be played this Saturday.
