Even though the Grammy Awards is over a month away, buzz about the nominees and potential winners is floating around the hallways of St. Paul Academy and Summit School.

The nominees for big awards such as Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year were announced at the Grammy Nomination Concert on Dec. 6. Performances by nominees Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Lorde and Katy Perry created even more excitement for the ceremony itself, which is on Jan. 26.

Many of the nominees included artists popular with SPA students, including Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Justin Timberlake, though some received mixed reviews from students. “I like most of them; there were some that I just don’t really enjoy very much,” senior Anna Matenaer said.

Matenaer has her own predictions of who will win this year. “I think that Imagine Dragons should win Record of the Year,” she said, “but I think that either Lorde or Bruno Mars will win it.”

Matenaer also believes that rap duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will take home the coveted Best New Artist award. “They have been so popular lately, but I think it would be cool if Ed Sheeran won it.”

Another important piece of the Grammy Awards ceremonies is the performances by many artists. Matenaer is hoping that Miley Cyrus will make an appearance.
