For sports, the year of 2023 has been a year full of practice, competition, and friendship. Day after day, students walk out of school ready to work toward their athletic dreams. Through all of this, unique experiences, exceptional athletes, strong relationships, and special moments are created. Here are our selections for the top five sports stories of the year.
1. Fencing’s first tournament leads to SPA dominance – Ivy Raya (January 17, 2023)
2. Burns dominates on the slopes – Eliana Mann (February 23, 2023)
SNOWY SLOPES. Burns has been passionate about alpine skiing from a young age. The sport is very challenging, with steep terrain, sharp turns, injuries, and countless hours of practice. But nevertheless, Burns continues to foster a deep love for the slopes. (Eliana Mann)
3. Co-op sports provide connectivity, relationships between fans – Tommy Verhey (February 26, 2023)
LET’S GO SPARTANS. Students gather to cheer on the SPA boys hockey team as they face off against Highland Park in the first round of the section tournament. The Spartans went on to win the game 5-2. (Hazel Waltenbaugh)
PARTNERS. Sophomore Elle Williams taps rackets with her doubles partner after a good point. Despite her strong desire to, Williams has never had the opportunity to play competitive doubles with her brother, Aidan Williams. “We’ve never competed in a tournament together because tournaments rarely offer mixed doubles,” she said. 5. Captains Rishi Bhargava and Evy Sachs lead from the heart – Greyson Sale (December 5, 2023)
TROJAN. Senior Rishi Bhargava prepares to dive in a race from last season. For the first time this year, Bhargava became a captain of the Trojan swim team. “I really want to share my passion for swimming with the rest of the team and help out by being a leader and doing my part,” he said.
