Students on the German (top) and French (bottom)  exchange trips during spring of 2015. St. Paul Academy and Summit School’s spring tourist trips to France and Germany have been cancelled due to instability in both countries relating to the Syrian Refugee Crisis and France recently declaring a state of emergency after the numerous attacks by ISIS. “The trips are meant to be fun… I don’t want terrorism to stop us from having this really good experience, however France declared a national state of emergency after the attacks… it just seems like asking for trouble,” Upper School French teacher Sophie Kerman said.

Heightened security in France and Germany could impede the ability of travelers to have a full educational experience; as a result the Language Department cancelled the spring trips.
The German students not only get the chance to practice their English and teach the SPA students their national language while they’re here, but they also get to understand different views.  It’s a “unique opportunity for our students to not travel and be a tourist,” and instead “...practice language on a personal level,”  US German teacher Jutta Crowder said.  Two teachers and 16 students from the Heisenberg-Gymnasium Hamburg present in the Sept. 30 assembly.
