While not quite a newer trend, plaid shirts are the epitome of versatile, and can be layered on many different levels. A plaid shirt can be worn plain, even better with subtle jewlery. For school, however, especially as the temperature drops, they can be worn buttoned under sweaters or unbuttoned over plain shirts (or even over patterned ones, for the daring).
