While other students were out partying or handing out candy, this Halloween members of Community Action and Service spent their Halloween collecting canned and non-perishable food items for the We Scare Hunger event. They will be donating the items they collected to Francis’ Basket in Highland Park and Hallie Q. Brown Center Food Shelf. On Oct. 30, students walked around their neighborhoods and handed out flyers that said they would be coming by on Halloween to collect canned goods.

“It was a fun way to do something for the community and still hang out with my friends,” sophomore Ellie Rosso said.

CAS’ main mission is to provide service opportunities for students and encourage people to get out of their comfort zones and help people in need. In addition to organizing the service fair, they host several different service outings throughout the year. Their next service opportunity is packing meals on Thanksgiving morning for Meals on Wheels.

“As a really privileged group of people it’s important to help the community as much as possible,” Rosso said.

The two groups groups that participated in We Scare Hunger collected five grocery bags full of food that will be donated this week. CAS plans on continuing this tradition for years to come, and they encourage anybody who is interested to consider coming with them.

“It’s a really good way to go trick or treating if you think you’re too old because when we got the food, people would give us candy too,” senior Annie Bottern said.
