This year, Service Learning found a new way to encourage student participation in community service by organizing a school-wide “Service Day” in March. The group hopes to organize a large selection of volunteer options so students can decide where they want to volunteer. Senior Anna Carlson, one of the presidents of Service Learning, said, “We’re trying to get a variety of options including playing with kids, spending time in a nursing home, serving meals to the homeless, and preparing meals for a children’s hospital. We are also trying to get some forms of in-school service for the other half of the day, such as tie-blanket making for the humane society.” Similar to the service hours all sophomores are required to fulfill, this day will help people and organizations that are in need. Service Learning hopes that Service Day will inspire more students to carry on this kindness and participate in community service on their own.
