Intercultural Club members (from left to right) junior Bella Martinez, junior Evva Parsons, senior Charlie Rosenblum, senior Alicia Zhang, senior Ysabella Johnson, junior Jesus Vega, junior Emma Rodgerson, and freshman Lutalo Jones meet during X Period. “By the time [Intercultural Club] actually started working on [planning the Martin Luther King Jr. assembly] in December, it just kind of made things tighter to get everything done,” co-advisor of IC Karen Dye said.

The 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. school assembly is already planned to be a little different from tradition, as the traditional speaker-in-the-gym routine was replaced with a viewing of movies that students signed up to watch, according to their own interests. However the change in tradition was taken a step further when the event was postponed from Jan. 21 to 27, almost a week later.

Changes in the date were caused by a variety of factors, including late event planning committee meetings due to school cancellation post winter break. The idea of watching movies was also suggested “relatively later in the year. By the time [Intercultural Club] actually started working on it in December, it just kind of made things tighter to get everything done,” according to co-advisor of IC Karen Dye.

Also, the complexity of having multiple movies and a longer viewing time add more items to the checklist of items involved in preparation. “Because of the nature of the activity, it’s very different, and it involves a lot of people and things like maintenance, and even food service because the lunch schedule is going to be changed, figuring out the rooms, ordering the DVD’s, all that stuff,” Dye said.
