Hoeschen’s all ears for new jewelry

Nowadays, being fashionable and stylish is harder said than done. Not only does it mean following the latest trends, but also adding personal touch- uniqueness. What better way is there to do this than making clothes, bags, accessories first hand? This way, your style is guaranteed to be one of a kind.
Junior Ruby Hoeschen has recently hopped onto this new life hack by making her own jewelry, specifically earrings. Not only did her earrings have her own creative taste but also allowed her to save a good amount of money. Hoeschen said, “I started making jewelry kinda recently because I wanted more jewelry but it was really expensive to buy it and I don’t have any money cause I’m in high school and so I decided to just like buy cheap materials at Michaels and my mom already has some beads so I just started making earrings.”

But Hoeschen’s eagerness and smart decision to make her own earrings didn’t just start her but much earlier. When she was much younger, Hoeschen already had some basic skills and experiences in jewelry making. She said, “When I was younger I used to make jewelry with my mom a lot because she liked to do it and then me and my siblings would always make stuff together.”
Although seemingly tedious and hard, making jewelry isn’t nearly as hard as it may sound. Hoeschen shared that with the help of the internet, re-picking up the skill of making earrings took her barely anytime. Making earrings itself also isn’t too time-consuming.
“I kind of just taught myself. I just had the materials and kind of started playing around and seeing what worked. There was like a How To sheet that I found and I used that for earrings. And I usually try out a lot of beads cause I don’t know what looks good but if I had beads picked out it would take like ten minutes. It doesn’t take that long,” said Hoeschen.
And the best part about making her own jewelry, Hoeschen shared, was that people actually noticed. Instead of the generic jewelry that many highschoolers all buy and wear from chain stores or the web, Hoeschen had impressive jewelry that was unique to both the crowd and herself. She said, “I have had people offer, they asked if I would make them [earrings] for them and they said they would give me money for them [earrings] so maybe in the future if someone asked I would probably make them a pair.”

Not only has making jewelry allow Hoeschen to save money, explore her taste in fashion, and present her creative side to others, it has also allowed her to gained a new hobby out of school. One that doesn’t involve screens like many hobbies in modern-day but just a pair of hands, some tools, and a chunk of time for an activity to do alone, with friends, or family.
