Latinos Unidos’ annual Cinco de Mayo celebration brought students and faculty to the Lily Courtyard. With catchy Latin tunes, a piñata and 75 degree weather, participants played for the entirety of X-period.
Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrating the victory of the 1862 Battle of Puebla where Mexican troops defeated invading French forces.
Senior Grace Medrano took time off of her senior project to return to school, set-up and join the celebration. Despite Cinco de Mayo not being a major holiday in Mexico, Medrano feels it holds a special place within the school community.
“Ever since I was in middle school, there’s been a Cinco de Mayo celebration…I think it’s a really fun event we can do sort of to mark the [academic] year being almost over, and just a fun little moment before we get into finals,” Medrano said.
One minor pitfall for her was that Latinos Unidos was not able to get conchas.
Junior Roman Farley especially enjoyed the celebration, participating in batting the piñata and shimmying to the music with friends.
“I like having celebrations like this. It helps expand the school culture a little bit,” Farley said. “The piñata is always fun. I like the music and…that [the celebration] is outside.”
