“Automatic”, released Friday, has 11 tracks ranging from 34 seconds to almost five minutes in length. The album comes three years after the release of “Brightside”. The instrumentals of the album are decently similar to The Lumineers’s previous works but the album contains some new themes and lyricism. Contrasting the topic of being in a relationship described in “Brightside”, this album focuses more on human connection outside of a relationship, as well as feelings once a relationship ends or falls apart. The album also touches on current topics and societal struggles in songs like “Plasticine” and “Keys on the Table”. Overall, while some of the songs sound similar to what Lumineers listeners have already heard, the majority of the album features new sounds and themes in addition to instrumental and lyrical experimentation that can be heard on outstanding tracks like, “Asshole”, “Automatic”, “Plasticine” and “Ativan”. “Automatic” is proof that The Lumineers can produce dynamic and relevant music, while staying true to their original sound.
