President Elect Joe Biden won the 2020 US Presidential race beating main competitor President Trump who was running for his second term in office. Although President Trump has protested this election on the account of Voter Fraud, nothing has been found confirming that Biden is indeed the next president of the US. Assuming Trump concedes office and accepts the election results, Biden’s cabinet and the possibility of a republican senate will provide necessary stability for the country.
While Biden is in his honeymoon faze after winning, when he is sworn into office on January 20th he will have to face a republican senate. During Biden’s presidential run he promised too many large objectives on his agenda including environmental, tax and health-care policies. Although his agenda does tackle some of the country’s biggest problems, it is not realistic as he should be focusing on stabilizing the country. Trump’s presidency was one of the most controversial in history as he went through several impeachment trials. Following this, Biden shouldn’t focus on making massive changes to the country, but rather stabilizing the country after 4 controversial years of trump and focus on supplying a safe COVID-19 vaccine.
If Biden chooses to see his agenda through, a Republican Senate would most likely block the majority of his initiatives as they have a different agenda. Although the senate hasn’t been officially decided, if the Georgia runoff senate election went Republican then they would have control over the senate. This is good as it will make Biden work on the more realistic goals of his agenda rather than the ones that will change the country. As strange as this sounds, it will provide Biden with an excuse for his failed initiatives. If he provides this excuse, he also creates a public enemy being the Republican Senate, which could swing key voters in future elections.
President Elect Biden will follow the path of former presidents and use executive powers to pursue policies he can’t convince Congress to enact. He will try to stay within his power so that he doesn’t have to go through the Supreme Court whose conservative majority will stop him if he goes too far. This means that he will most likely favor non-controversial things in his agenda such as unions and reimposing heavy environmental regulations. These smaller things are what the country needs from Biden as the country suffers from COVID-19. His main agenda will be providing stability for the people and trying to help solve the pandemic. Biden has already issued statements in support of masks and a possible mask mandate which although controversial would decrease rising case numbers.
