The 2025 Oscar nominees were announced by the Academy last Thursday after a delay caused by the California wildfires. Spanish-language musical Emilia Perez received the most nods, with 13 nominations. The Brutalist and box-office smash Wicked had 10, with A Complete Unknown and Conclave following behind with 8 nominations each. This year’s choices, however, were filled with both snubs and surprises.

Summer favorite Challengers was notably shut out of the Oscar nominations, despite being a strong contender throughout the awards season. The film failed to secure nods for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, or even for its standout techno-party score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, despite receiving Golden Globe nominations for both the film and Zendaya, with the score taking home a Globe win. Another unexpected omission came with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, which was overlooked in the nominations, despite his acclaimed direction. Perhaps the biggest snub, though, was All We Imagine As Light being shut out from nomination completely. The film skyrocketed to international fame when it became the first Indian movie to win the Grand Prix at Cannes. However, international feature films must be submitted by their country, with each nation allowed only one submission. This year, India chose Laapata Ladies, leaving All We Imagine As Light out of the running. Despite this, All We Imagine As Light has since been named best international film by the New York Film Critics Circle, and best foreign-language film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Chicago Film Critics Association and the San Diego Film Critics Society and received two Golden Globe nominations. Barack Obama listed it as one of his top 10 movies of 2024.

On the other hand, the nominations brought some unexpected storylines worth following as the ceremony nears. Both Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong were nominated for their critically acclaimed roles in Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic, “The Apprentice”. As the 47th president begins his second term this month, the film brings to light his controversial past. In terms of dominating the nominations, one movie stands out: “Emilia Perez”. The Netflix-released Spanish-language French musical broke the record for a non-English language film with 13 nominations. What makes “Emilia Perez” noteworthy, though, is its reception; the movie has been critically panned and is being called one of the worst movies of all time to get nominated for an Oscar. The movie’s Netflix release draws attention to another non-quality issue with this year’s slate: accessibility. “The Brutalist”, for example, scored 8 nominations, yet the film wasn’t widely available in theaters until Jan. 24, 5 months after the film’s initial film festival release. Theatrical releases likewise plagued films such as “Nickel Boys.”
