Grammy attendees Lady Gaga and Nick Jonas wear white roses to symbolize their support of women’s rights.

During the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 28, red carpets were flooded with attendees holding or wearing white roses in honor of growing women’s movements. Familiar faces such as musicians Nick Jonas, Lady Gaga, and many others walked the red carpet in support of the #MeToo movement. The white roses symbolized the attendees support for women’s rights such as equal pay, and a hope for a future without sexual harassment. The group chose white roses to be the symbol for the night because of it’s historical meaning symbolizing hope, peace and resistance. The attendee’s support came shortly after the Time’s Up movement highlighted by actors and actresses who wore all black to the 75th Golden Globes on Jan. 7, 2018.

Celebrities and media influencers are showing their support for women’s movements on Hollywood’s biggest nights to get the message across in a symbolic way to mass audiences. At the Grammys, singer Lorde showed her support for the movement in a different way: she pinned a short excerpt written by Jenny Holzer to the back of her dress, that highlighted her hopes for women’s rights in the future.

The growing support for women’s rights coming from celebrities has begun to inspire others to show their own support. Ninth grader Izzy Brooks admires the celebrities who showed their support.

“I think it’s great what they’re doing. Some celebrities have faced harassment themselves, and are still showing their support and hope for the movement,” Brooks said.
