Martha Slaven volunteered at Gibbs Farm over the summer where she helped teach children about Dakota and pioneer people. “I think [the activities and educational opportunities] at Gibbs Farm really open kids up to a bunch of different perspectives and especially about the history of Dakota people, Slaven said.

Sophomore Isabel Dieperink combines her love of horses while volunteering at Lakeview Farm to teach children with anxiety or with an intellectual disability the joy of riding horses. I decided to apprentice with my horse trainer before I was volunteering so it was helpful to me to see and really be able to work with horses thoroughly to be able to understand their signals, and I could help teach the kids how to recognize that too, Dieperink said.

Sophomore Lauren Osteraas went on a volunteer trip over the summer to aid in the rebuilding of houses in New Orleans that were destroyed from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It was challenging to see how much poverty and damage there still was after so many years after Katrina. We did everything we could to make it the best it could be under the circumstances and it gave us hope to know that there were still thousands of other volunteers coming down to help with the thousands of other houses and people that are still struggling,” Osteraas said. Sophomore Jazz Ward traveled to the Dominican Republic over the summer with Rustic Pathways in hopes to begin the production of an aqueduct in a small village. There were multiple sessions of the same trip over the course of the summer and my group was the first session so over time more groups kept working on the same dig site. By the end of the summer the village had running water,” Ward said.
