Every year, a national standardized math test is administered within the upper school, called the AMC 12 test. The test consists of a wide variety of topics: everything from simple problem solving to percentages, probabilities, algebra, and geometry.

“There’s certainly nothing in the realm of Calculus or anything that far along,” mathematics department chair Bill Boulger said.

“[If students] score really well, they can be recognized nationally. This is the first in several levels of testing at the high school level. If somebody does well enough on the AMC 12 or AMC 10, they can be invited to what’s called the American Invitational Math Exam, which is longer, deeper and more difficult. These tests are used to identify the top students in the United States who then go to a math Olympiad training session. From that group, I guess maybe about eight students are chosen to go to an international competition,” Boulger said.

This year, students will have the option to take the test on Wednesday, February 7th.
