Senior Claire Foussard poses for a picture with locals from her Tanzania trip. “I formed some great relationships with both the people from the village I stayed in and the other volunteers I worked with,” she said.

For senior Claire Foussard, volunteering has become more than just a sophomore year requirement and an achievement to add to college apps. During the summer before her senior year, Foussard took a service trip to a small town in Tanzania to help build facilities for the local kids. “I wanted to do something interesting with my summer, and I thought it was a great opportunity to see a part of the world that I had never been to before,” Foussard said.

Although the trip had its challenges, she looks back on the experience fondly, and has taken a lot away from it. “I formed some great relationships with both the people from the village I stayed in and the other volunteers I worked with… it was really tough to live in an environment so far outside of my comfort zone, but it was ultimately a really rewarding experience despite some difficulty along the way.” Foussard said.
