St. Paul United goes through 17 games undefeated; plays top ranked Blake Tuesday

The goal for every team in sports is to go undefeated. For a football team to accomplish that over eight games like the Wolfpack did this past fall is impressive. However, for a hockey team to complete a 25 game regular season is almost unheard-of.

There are two undefeated teams left in the state of Minnesota for girls hockey; one being the top ranked team in class 2A, Hill Murray, and the other being St. Paul United, the third ranked team in class A. In United’s undefeated run they have outscored opponents 107-14, a goal difference of +93 compared to Hill-Murray’s +60 difference. SPU has also been able to take care of business in their non-conference schedule and avenge their loss to South St. Paul from last year’s section finals and beat Red Wing for the first time in team history.

However, United has yet to play their tough conference schedule that includes the two teams slotted above of them in the rankings, Blake and Breck. SPU plays Blake tomorrow in a game that has been circled on the schedule for weeks. A game that features two teams with a combined one loss and two teams that have combined to outscore opponents 193-30. This promises to be one of the best games of the season and a possible state tournament preview.

The puck drops from Drake Arena at 7:30 and United hopes to reverse fortunes against the three time defending state champions, Blake, who have beaten United each of the past six meetings. Blake has outscored United 40-7 in those six games.
