In a sea of red and white stood the SPA Girls Varsity Volleyball team. It was on the Visitation Varsity Volleyball court, and it was their homecoming on Sept. 21. The game was heavily punctuated by a full jazz band, a large Visitation fan section, and streamers of good luck to SPA’s opposing team.

Yet SPA took Visitation’s homecoming in their hands. After a swift win in the first set, SPA proved that they could take Visitation’s spirit away.

“It’s great when we can come out and dominate over a team when we know we can. It’s more fun that way because we have better chemistry and we have the opportunity to run more plays. It’s a chance for the whole team to get better,” junior and captain Kathleen Bishop said.

The second set, much like the first, took off with consecutive points from SPA. Bishop, the setter, was able to run quick outside sets to senior and outside hitter Blythe Rients. Likewise, junior Audrey Egly served a tough serve to score SPA several aces.

When the third set commenced, Visitation put up a tough defense and competitive serving. Towards the end of the set, the teams were tied 24-24. After two consecutive kills by Rients, the Spartans won with a final score in the third set of 26-24.

Junior Duncan Fleming was among the sea of fans, however, he was there to cheer on SPA.

“It was pretty exciting to watch, the team didn’t really go down at all except for in the third set. It was fun being in the crowd because it was kind of a team spirit activity to cheer on,” Fleming said.

Duncan suggests fans should attend an SPA volleyball game to feed off of the team’s spirit, “I’d recommend going because the intensity of the games brings so much energy to the experience of watching it,” he said.

The SPA Girls Varsity team has a game on Sept. 24 at 6:00 p.m. at Mounds Park Academy and a game on Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Breck.
