By midday, viewers settled in with blankets and snacks at the annual movie marathon: “Apart from Bigelow not really being a ‘cozy’ space, the feet of snow, inches of popcorn, and hours of film made for a great day and night,” attendee Will Rinkoff said.

What do the films Big, Enchanted, 500 Days of Summer, Napoleon Dynamite and Slumdog Millionaire have in common? Large dance scenes that do not further the plot… “in any way,” according to co-Film Club President Drew Fawcett.  On the morning of Feb. 24, a handful of students gathered in Bigelow Commons wrapped in blankets and (for some) homework to commence Film Club’s annual movie marathon.

Food and beverages were provided, and at the end of the event, prizes were given to those who stayed the longest.

“The marathon concept goes back to an old Landmark Theaters idea in the days of the anthology film house, and really it is the precedent for the current TV binge-watching trend. But we see it as an opportunity for younger film enthusiasts to get a quick shot of film history and fun around a specific idea (which is why the marathon tends to focus on genre),” Film Club advisor Randall Findlay said.

“Apart from Bigelow not really being a ‘cozy’ space, the feet of snow, inches of popcorn, and hours of film made for a great day and night,” attendee Will Rinkoff said.

Film Club hosts movie nights every other Wednesday throughout the year and is wrapping up their Study Break with Oscar series this coming Wednesday. After Spring Break, the group sponsors the Student Produced Movie Night.
