As exams approach, students should consider the little acts of self-care they can take to minimize their stress levels and brighten up their days. A candle’s ambient glow and faint lavender perfume helps calm nerves and refocus the brain, making it a great addition to any de-stressing routine. In addition to their relaxing use during exams, DIY candles also make fun gifts to give this holiday season.

Follow along the instructions below to make a scented candle right at home, for personal use or to give away.

Step 1. Assemble the necessary materials: a wax block or wax shreds (beeswax or soy-based), pre-waxed wicks, essential oils, a heat-proof container for the candle, a heat-proof container to melt the wax in, a cooking pot, chopticks, and tape. Optional: colored crayons, if a pigmented candle is desired.

As always, exercise caution when working with fire and do not leave the candle unattended.
