Senior Taylor Rients prepares food at Sharing and Caring Hands during the holiday season. “Seeing and helping these people has been a big eye opener for me,” Rients said.

Some families go to sports games for fun, others may go bowling, but for the family of senior Taylor Rients, a favorite family bonding activity is volunteering at Sharing and Caring Hands, and organization that looks to support people who are not able to receive help from welfare.

Rients and her sister, freshman Blythe Rients, along with their grandma, dedicate their time together to make and serve food to the people that come through the shelter.

“We make and serve food for people who dont have money to eat or even a house to cook food in,” Rients said. Not only does Sharing and Caring Hands serve meals, they also offer shelter, dental care, as well as opportunities to get bus passes, or a voucher for state identification.

All of the experiences that Rients has gained from the work are like none other.

“It is humbling to see all the people from all these walks of life. I’ve seen men in suits come in little girls with their families and single mothers taking care of 5 kids at a time. Going to a school like SPA and living a life like we do makes it easy to forget how blessed we are. Seeing and helping these people has been a big eye opener for me,” Rients said.
