The Boys Hockey team celebrates after one of their seven goals in last year’s section final game against Totino-Grace. The 7-1 win took SPA to their first boys hockey state tournament.

The Boys Varsity Hockey team is deeply rooted with different traditions and celebrations. More than just a sport, to some players it is a lifestyle. Senior Jack Sullivan has been playing hockey since he was little.

“I live for hockey; I love it,” Sullivan said. “Since I was young, I’ve been playing hockey with my Dad at a rink near my house.”

This is senior Dominic Picciano’s first year on the team, where he already feels comfortable.

“We’re just a band of brothers,” Picciano said.

To get ready for each game, one of the team’s traditions is a cheer they shout out in the locker room while they get prepared.

“We have a little chant we do before every game. We are a team, we are excellent, we are together, we are champions,” senior Weston Lombard said.

This chant helps the team to get ready mentally before they play a game.

Music is another way the team gets excited.

“My pump up song is ‘Champion’ by Kanye West because we’re all champions,” Lombard said.

Winning a game is rewarding, but the celebration is where lots of the enjoyment happens.

“We celebrate a win by a dance party, team showers, and going out to eat afterwards,” senior Jack Sullivan said.

High spirits and plenty of fun help fuel this team onto its next game.

The team’s aspirations this year are high, coming off of a state run the previous season.

“We want to win state, win the tournament,” Lombard said.
